Nintendo Wii U |
|
As expected, Nintendo has officially unveiled its Wii successor at E3 2011. The new console, called Wii U, boasts HD visuals and the ability to let players play Wii U games remotely on the console controller's screen. According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, this will be down "without latency issues." Despite this feature, the controller's not made to be used as a standalone handheld and should be kept in close proximity to the Wii U itself.
The controller, which is pretty big to accomodate the built-in touchscreen, will also sport a pair of analog sticks, one d-pad, four face buttons, two shoulder buttons, and two triggers. It'll also feature a front-facing camera, a microphone, and motion control capability.
Here's a quick rundown of the Wii U features that Nintendo has announced so far:
High definition display, up to 1080p resolution via HDMI output
6.2" touchscreen on New Controller, running in non-HD resolution
Internal flash-based media storage, upgradeable via USB and SD carts
Games ship on proprietary iDensity discs of unspecified, but "large capacity"
Games will also be available as downloadable content
Console compatible with Wii games and devices
Nintendo currently plans to release the new console after the end of the company's fiscal year. That places its launch sometime between April 1, 2012, to December 31, 2012.
